M&M’s Dropping Two Colors From Candy Lineup

M&M’s is making a colorful change as it celebrates a major milestone.

The iconic candy brand turns 85 this year, and to mark the occasion, Mars is rolling out a new version of M&M’s made without artificial dyes beginning in August. But fans may notice something missing when they open a bag.

At least for now, the familiar blue and brown candies won’t be included in the updated lineup.

According to Mars, those two colors have proven especially difficult — and expensive — to recreate using natural ingredients. As a result, the company is starting with a simplified mix featuring red, yellow, orange, and green.

Mars says it experimented with adding new colors like pink and purple, but ultimately decided to stick with the classic palette, minus blue and brown, during the transition.

The change isn’t permanent. The company plans to bring back the full rainbow of colors by 2028, once it’s able to successfully produce natural versions of the missing shades.

The move comes amid renewed pressure on food companies to eliminate artificial dyes from their products. Mars had previously pledged to make similar changes years ago but later backed away. Now, the company appears to be taking another step toward that goal as consumer expectations continue to shift.

For M&M’s fans, it means a slightly different look in the candy bowl — at least for the next few years.
